X-ray Diffraction (XRD) Analysis: Materials Identification and Characterization

What is X-ray Diffraction?

X-ray diffraction is based on the interaction of an X-ray beam with the atomic structure of a crystalline material. As the X-rays pass through the sample, they are deflected, forming a diffraction pattern unique to each crystalline substance. This pattern is then analyzed to identify the phases present.

Applications of XRD analysis

Total Rock XRD

Total rock XRD analysis identifies the mineral phases present in a rock sample without prior mineral separation. This method is particularly useful for :

  • Determining the overall mineralogical composition of a sample.
Study mineral transformations under different geological conditions.
  • Compare mineralogical variations between several samples from the same site.

Clay XRD

XRD analysis of clays is a specific method for identifying and quantifying the clay minerals present in a sample. This analysis is essential for :

  • Determine the nature and abundance of clay minerals (kaolinite, illite, smectite, etc.).
  • Study mineralogical changes under different environmental conditions.
  • Characterize soils and sedimentary formations.

X-ray Diffraction FAQ

How long does a XRD analysis take?

Analysis times vary according to the type of analysis (Total Rock or Clay) and the complexity of the sample, but our results are generally available quickly. For the urgent cases, we can provide results within 48 hours. Normal turnaround 2 to 3 weeks.

What quantity of sample is required?

We recommend a minimum of 0.5 g of fine powder to ensure accurate analysis.
